Scotch Game Games
The Scotch Game begins with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4. Instead of the slow buildup of the Ruy Lopez or the Italian, White strikes in the center immediately and forces Black to resolve the central tension from move three.
That direct approach gives the Scotch a very different character from other 1.e4 e5 openings. The main lines lead quickly to open positions with active piece play, and the opening has become a practical alternative for players who want to avoid the deep Ruy Lopez theory without giving up White's ambitions.

Strategic Ideas
After 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4, White has traded the d-pawn for Black's e-pawn and placed a centralized knight on d4. The resulting structure is open, both sides develop quickly, and the game typically revolves around piece play rather than a fixed pawn formation.
Black's main responses are 4...Nf6, entering the Classical Scotch or the Mieses Variation, and 4...Bc5, leading to sharp play in the main lines. In both cases Black usually accepts an active White position in return for clear development and early central exchanges.
A common White idea is e4-e5 at an appropriate moment, kicking the Black knight from f6 and gaining more space. Black usually replies with ...Qe7 or ...d6 and looks for piece activity and timely central breaks.
Practical Play
The Scotch is an excellent practical weapon for players who do not want to memorize a huge amount of Ruy Lopez theory. The main lines lead to clear-cut positions where understanding piece activity, central breaks, and king safety is more important than knowing every subvariation.
Black must also be prepared. The Mieses Variation in particular leads to a slightly imbalanced middlegame where passive play can quickly become strategically difficult, and accuracy in the opening phase is still important.
Main Branches
The main Scotch lines are the Classical Variation with 4...Bc5, the Schmidt Variation with 4...Nf6 5.Nxc6 bxc6, and the Mieses Variation with 4...Nf6 5.Nxc6 bxc6 6.e5 Qe7 7.Qe2 Nd5 8.c4.
The Scotch Gambit, 4.Bc4 instead of 4.Nxd4, is a related option that leads to more romantic, attacking games and shares many ideas with the Italian and the Two Knights.
History & Legacy
The Scotch Game takes its name from a 19th-century correspondence match between Edinburgh and London. It was respectable mainline theory during the romantic era but gradually lost popularity to the Ruy Lopez in the classical period.
The modern revival of the Scotch is usually credited to Garry Kasparov, who used it successfully against Anatoly Karpov in world championship play and demonstrated that the opening still offers real winning chances at the top level. Since then it has been a regular guest in elite practice.
