Four Knights Game
The Four Knights Game begins with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6. Both sides develop their knights to their most natural squares, and the position is briefly symmetrical before White commits to a specific plan on move four.
That symmetry gives the Four Knights a reputation as a calm, classical opening, but the actual games can be sharp. Historic systems such as the Belgrade Gambit and the Halloween Gambit exist inside this move order, and the modern Scotch Four Knights remains a serious main-line weapon.

Strategic Ideas
The Four Knights is a natural classical development. Both sides have brought their knights out, and the key decision is whether White plays the slow Spanish Four Knights with 4.Bb5, the direct Scotch Four Knights with 4.d4, or a sharp gambit line such as the Belgrade.
In the Spanish Four Knights, the game often resembles a simplified Ruy Lopez. In the Scotch Four Knights, the center opens quickly and the game becomes much more tactical. The choice often depends on whether White wants a quiet strategic fight or an open piece battle.
A famous Black response is 4.Bb5 Nd4, the Rubinstein Variation, which gives Black active piece play and deliberately unbalances the game rather than allowing quiet symmetry.
Practical Play
The Four Knights is a popular club-level opening because it is easy to reach and avoids most of the deeper Ruy Lopez and Italian theory. The main ideas can be learned quickly, and both sides usually reach a playable middlegame without much memorization.
At higher levels, the Four Knights remains a respectable repertoire choice. The Scotch Four Knights in particular has appeared in many recent elite games as a way to avoid heavy Ruy Lopez preparation.
Main Branches
The main branches are the Scotch Four Knights (4.d4), the Spanish Four Knights (4.Bb5), the Italian Four Knights (4.Bc4), and several gambit lines such as the Belgrade Gambit (4.d4 exd4 5.Nd5) and the Halloween Gambit (4.Nxe5).
The Rubinstein Variation (4.Bb5 Nd4) is Black's most ambitious try against the Spanish Four Knights, leading to imbalanced positions rather than the solid but slightly passive main lines.
History & Legacy
The Four Knights was a main-line opening during the early 20th century, when it was considered a serious alternative to the Ruy Lopez. Players such as Rubinstein and Capablanca used it regularly, and many classical games from that period were played from Four Knights structures.
Its popularity faded as the Ruy Lopez grew even more dominant, but the Scotch Four Knights has been rehabilitated in recent decades and continues to appear at the top level as a practical main line.
