King's Gambit
The King's Gambit begins with 1.e4 e5 2.f4. White offers the f-pawn to open lines toward the Black king, speed up development, and fight for a central pawn majority. It is one of the oldest and most famous attacking openings in the game.
At the same time it is one of the riskiest. Modern defensive theory has shown that Black can equalize with accurate play, and the King's Gambit is rarely seen at the very top level. It remains, however, a favorite of attacking players and a staple of romantic chess history.

Strategic Ideas
The central idea is to open the f-file, remove a defender of e5, and follow up with rapid development and a kingside attack. After 2...exf4, White usually continues with 3.Nf3 or 3.Bc4, preparing to recover the pawn later or sacrifice it completely for an open, attacking game.
Black's main choices are to accept the gambit with 2...exf4 (the King's Gambit Accepted) or to decline with 2...Bc5 or 2...d5 (the Falkbeer Countergambit). Each choice leads to very different middlegames and requires specific preparation.
Modern defenses against the King's Gambit often rely on accurate piece play and timely returns of the extra pawn to neutralize White's initiative. The resulting positions reward concrete calculation much more than general principles.
Practical Play
The King's Gambit is excellent for practical attacking play, especially at club level. White's ideas are active and tactical, and even accurate defense requires Black to calculate carefully and know the main lines.
At the same time, the opening has fallen out of top-level practice because modern preparation gives Black reliable equalizing methods. It is still a strong practical surprise weapon, particularly in faster time controls.
Main Branches
The main King's Gambit branches are the King's Gambit Accepted (2...exf4) and the King's Gambit Declined, which includes the Classical Defense (2...Bc5) and the Falkbeer Countergambit (2...d5).
Inside the accepted lines, the most famous continuations are 3.Nf3 followed by classical attacking systems such as the Kieseritzky Gambit and the Muzio Gambit, where White sacrifices material for a direct attack against f7 and g7.
History & Legacy
The King's Gambit is one of the foundational openings of romantic chess. In the 19th century it was played by masters such as Paul Morphy and Adolf Anderssen, and many of the most famous brilliancies in chess history come from King's Gambit games.
It gradually faded as defensive technique improved, but it still appears in elite practice as a surprise weapon and remains one of the purest expressions of attacking chess in the classical tradition.
