Bishop's Opening Games
The Bishop's Opening begins with 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4. White targets f7 immediately and develops the bishop before the knight, which gives the opening a flexible character and the ability to transpose into many related 1.e4 e5 structures.
Although it looks modest, the Bishop's Opening is a serious weapon. It has been used as a surprise line by top players and is a natural way to avoid the Petrov and other well-known drawing weapons while still heading toward familiar Italian and Vienna middlegames.

Strategic Ideas
The Bishop's Opening is all about flexible move orders. By committing the bishop first, White keeps the option of either a classical Italian-style development or a more aggressive setup with f2-f4 and Nc3, which often transposes into the Vienna.
Black usually responds with 2...Nf6 or 2...Bc5. Both moves are natural and lead to similar structures as the Italian Game, but the different move order can steer the position into less theoretical territory.
One attraction of the Bishop's Opening is that it sidesteps the Petrov Defense. Against 2.Nf3 Nf6, many Black players aim for an easy equalizing line, but 2.Bc4 rules out that approach and keeps White in charge of the opening debate.
Practical Play
The Bishop's Opening is a practical weapon for players who want an Italian-style game without walking into well-prepared Petrov or Berlin setups. Because many lines transpose into the Italian or Vienna, your existing knowledge of those openings usually carries over directly.
Black has to be ready for these transpositions. Natural development with ...Nf6, ...Nc6, ...Bc5 or ...Be7, and ...d6 is usually fine, but Black should know the main plans in the resulting middlegame rather than relying on a specific Petrov line that will simply not appear here.
Main Branches
The main Bishop's Opening branches are the Berlin Defense (2...Nf6), the Classical (2...Bc5), and the sharp Vienna-like setup with 3.Nc3 that can turn into an attacking gambit with f2-f4.
Within 2...Nf6, White often plays 3.d3 to reach a quiet Italian-style game, or 3.Nc3 to head for Vienna structures. Each branch connects to a different neighboring opening.
History & Legacy
The Bishop's Opening is among the oldest openings in chess, analyzed in Italian sources going back to the 16th century. It was a regular guest in romantic-era play before being overtaken by the Ruy Lopez and modern Italian move orders.
In the 21st century it has returned as a surprise weapon, particularly in the hands of elite players who want to dodge the Petrov and steer the game into positions where general understanding matters more than deep preparation.
