Semi-Tarrasch Defense
The Semi-Tarrasch Defense arises after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 c5. Black plays the Tarrasch idea of ...c5 but with an extra knight move, which avoids the isolated queen's pawn structure that often arises in the pure Tarrasch.
The Semi-Tarrasch has a reputation as one of Black's most solid mainline choices against the Queen's Gambit. It leads to clear strategic positions where both sides know the main plans, making it popular at every level from club to world championship.

Strategic Ideas
The Semi-Tarrasch's defining feature is that after cxd5, Black can often recapture with the knight instead of the pawn, avoiding the isolated queen's pawn structure entirely. The resulting positions are symmetrical and lead to calmer, positional middlegames.
White usually plays for a small but lasting edge with quick development, kingside castling, and pressure on the d-file. Black aims for complete development, piece activity, and balanced play based on central control.
The opening is a useful contrast to the pure Tarrasch. Where the Tarrasch accepts structural weaknesses for activity, the Semi-Tarrasch keeps the structure clean at the cost of slightly less dynamic piece play.
Practical Play
The Semi-Tarrasch is one of the most solid answers to the Queen's Gambit at the top level. It is well-known, well-analyzed, and rewards understanding over memorization.
For Black, it is an excellent choice against strong opposition because it avoids sharp theoretical traps while still giving practical chances to play for a win in the middlegame.
Main Branches
The main Semi-Tarrasch branches run through 5.cxd5 Nxd5 or 5.cxd5 exd5, with each leading to very different structures. Modern main lines often feature the symmetrical ...Nxd5 6.e4 setup.
The opening shares ideas and move orders with the Tarrasch and the Queen's Gambit Declined, so many games transpose between these families.
History & Legacy
The Semi-Tarrasch has been a mainline opening for most of the 20th century. It was famously used in world championship practice by players such as Spassky and Kasparov, and its theoretical status has always been considered sound.
It continues to appear regularly at the top level as a reliable response to 1.d4, especially for players who want a classical, non-forced answer to the Queen's Gambit.
