Philidor Defense
The Philidor Defense begins with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6. Black defends the e5 pawn with the d-pawn instead of developing the knight to c6, aiming for a solid pawn structure even at the cost of some early development speed.
Named after the 18th-century French master François-André Danican Philidor, the opening reflects his famous principle that pawns are the soul of chess. Modern Philidor play usually reaches the position through the Pirc-style move order 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5, which avoids some of White's sharpest attacking options.

Strategic Ideas
The Philidor's structure is naturally solid but passive. Black usually completes development with ...Nd7, ...Ngf6, ...Be7, and ...O-O, then looks for the right moment to play ...c6 and ...Qc7 or ...exd4 followed by active piece play.
White usually responds with quick central expansion via 3.d4. If Black takes on d4, White recaptures with the knight and enjoys more space and freer piece play. Black relies on a solid setup and waits for tactical or structural opportunities rather than fighting for an immediate initiative.
The main strategic risk for Black is passivity. Without accurate move orders, Black can end up in a worse version of the Ruy Lopez or Philidor structure with no counterplay. That is why many modern players reach Philidor positions through Pirc-like move orders to avoid the sharpest White attacks.
Practical Play
The Philidor is a practical choice for players who value pawn structure over piece activity. It is simple to learn, easy to remember, and gives Black a reliable setup against 1.e4 without requiring deep theoretical knowledge.
The main downside is that Black's winning chances are limited if White plays accurately. Many top players avoid the Philidor as Black because it is seen as too passive, but it remains a respected defensive system at club and tournament level.
Main Branches
The main Philidor branches are the Hanham Variation (Black aims for ...Nd7, ...Ngf6, ...Be7, ...c6, keeping the center closed), the Exchange Variation (3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4), and the Philidor Countergambit (3.d4 f5), a sharp but risky line.
Many modern games reach these positions through the Pirc-like move order 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5, because White's sharpest attacking options against the direct move order 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 are then avoided.
History & Legacy
François-André Danican Philidor was one of the strongest players of the 18th century and the first to write seriously about pawn structure as the foundation of chess strategy. The opening is named after him and reflects his strategic ideas.
Although the Philidor is no longer a main-line choice at the top level, it remains a respected system for players who prefer solid structures, and it continues to appear in correspondence and club play as a reliable answer to 1.e4.
