King's Indian Defense
The King's Indian Defense begins with 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6. Black prepares to fianchetto the king's bishop, accepts that White will build a large classical center, and plans to attack that center later with pawn breaks and active piece play.
It is one of the most important hypermodern openings in the game. Rather than challenging White's center immediately, Black invites it forward and then strikes back with moves like ...e5, ...c5, or ...f5, leading to some of the most famous attacking games in chess history.

Strategic Ideas
The core King's Indian idea is to let White build a big pawn center with d4 and c4, then undermine it with ...e5 or ...c5. Black's fianchettoed bishop on g7 controls the long diagonal and supports these central breaks while defending the king.
After White closes the center with d5, the game often turns into a race: White attacks on the queenside while Black attacks on the kingside with ...f5, ...f4, and ...g5-g4. These opposite-side attacks make the King's Indian one of the most exciting openings in modern chess.
In quieter lines such as the Fianchetto Variation, the play is more balanced and positional. Black can generate chances with ...c5, ...Nc6, and gradual queenside expansion rather than a kingside attack.
Practical Play
The King's Indian is a fighting opening that gives Black real winning chances even against strong opposition. It is famous for creating unbalanced positions where both sides have clear plans and mistakes are heavily punished.
At the same time it is theoretically demanding. The main lines have been analyzed for decades, and Black needs to understand both the typical pawn breaks and the timing of the kingside attack to handle them well.
Main Branches
The main King's Indian branches are the Classical Variation (4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 O-O 6.Be2), the Fianchetto Variation (with g3), the Sämisch (5.f3), the Four Pawns Attack (5.f4), and the Averbakh (5.Be2 O-O 6.Bg5).
Within the Classical, the main battleground is the Mar del Plata line with 9...Ne7, which leads to the famous wing attacks that define the opening's reputation.
History & Legacy
The King's Indian rose to prominence in the mid-20th century, championed by players such as Bronstein, Boleslavsky, and later Fischer. Its hypermodern ideas fit the aggressive, uncompromising style of players who wanted to play for a win with Black.
Garry Kasparov used the King's Indian extensively during his climb to the world championship, and it remains a central fighting weapon in modern practice. Even today it is one of the clearest ways for Black to create imbalanced positions against 1.d4.
