Colle System
The Colle System is built around 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e3, with White choosing a modest but flexible pawn setup that prepares quick development and a potential kingside attack. Its typical structure features pawns on d4, e3, and c3 with the bishop on d3.
It is one of the simplest 1.d4 systems to learn, and for decades it has been the favorite first-repertoire opening of players who want to avoid mainline Queen's Gambit theory without giving up attacking chances.

Strategic Ideas
The Colle's main plan is to build a classical pawn structure with d4, e3, and c3, develop the light-squared bishop to d3, and prepare a central or kingside break with e3-e4. When that break succeeds, White often gets active piece play and attacking chances against the Black king.
A classical Colle plan involves Nf3, Bd3, c3, Nbd2, and O-O, followed by e4 when the moment is right. If the e4 break is well-timed, White often gets open lines toward the enemy king with good attacking prospects.
Black usually responds with natural development, ...c5, and sometimes ...Bg4 or ...Bf5 to contest the light squares. The main challenge for Black is to keep piece activity while preventing the e4 break from becoming overwhelming.
Practical Play
The Colle is one of the best beginner-friendly 1.d4 systems. Its ideas are easy to understand, and it teaches core classical concepts such as piece development, pawn breaks, and kingside attacks.
At the top level the Colle is rare, because elite players prefer openings with more theoretical depth. It still appears regularly in rapid play and as a surprise weapon.
Main Branches
The main Colle variations are the classical Koltanowski setup with c3 and Nbd2, and the Zukertort variation with b3 and Bb2, which aims for a similar structure but with the dark-squared bishop on the long diagonal.
The London System, which develops the dark-squared bishop to f4 instead of keeping it on c1, is a closely related setup-based opening with overlapping ideas.
History & Legacy
The Colle System is named after the Belgian master Edgard Colle, who played it extensively in the 1920s and 1930s. He used the opening to generate many attacking victories in international tournaments.
It has remained popular as a practical weapon for club players and as an occasional top-level surprise, especially in rapid and blitz events where simple setups have extra value.
